Oh man, what a trip. It was my sophomore year and I remember that each student had to give $40.00 for their portion of the trip. THEN we had to raise money to cover the rest. We were all so excited, airplane ride, marching in the biggest parade of the year......ahh what could be better.
I remember someone coming from the parade board and watching our routine, as a majorette we wore our wool uniforms for the exhibition. Man were we hot in that Florida sun. Then our director Pat, when asked if we had any other uniforms said 'well yes we have sequin uniforms also'. Yep you guessed it that is what they wanted to see.
DANG were we cold. The staff actually had to put us in the lobby of the Macy's Department store prior to our step off to keep us warm. My mother told me when I returned that during the broadcast the commentator said "no folks, don't adjust your color dials those girls are actually purple they are so cold". We laughed for a couple years about that one. Even though we froze our butts off I wouldn't have changed it for the world.
A lot of things happened that trip, one not so funny at that time was that a bird flying over Mrs. Townsend's head decided to .... you know... she had to find a salon real quick :)
My My I am showing my age! I don't remember standing inside Macy's and anything about Mrs. Townsend's hair. I DO however remember being masking taped inside our hotel room at night and if the tape was torn in the a.m. we would be on our way home. I remember Connie Connors saying pinch your cheeks to make them pink. HA Mine were already beet red from freezing my... off. I also remember getting up so damn early and we had only slept about 3 hours before we had to go and practice in front of the camera before the parade. Beth, weren't you in my room in NY? I have a picture somewhere around here to shows us jumping on the beds! I will have to begin my search to find it!!
